DETROIT — Former Fort McMurray resident Sebastian Cossa is heading to the Utah Mammoth after the Detroit Red Wings traded the goaltender during the first round of the NHL Draft on Friday.
Detroit acquired the 23rd overall pick in exchange for Cossa and used the selection to draft Kamloops Blazers forward J.P. Hurlbert.
Cossa, who grew up in Fort McMurray before developing into one of Canada’s top goaltending prospects, was selected 15th overall by Detroit in the 2021 NHL Draft.
The 6-foot-7 netminder is coming off one of the strongest seasons of his professional career, posting a 26-8-4 record with a 2.33 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage for the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins during the 2025-26 season.
Despite those numbers, Cossa did not appear in the AHL playoffs after teammate Michal Postava took over the starting role.
Cossa has appeared in one NHL regular-season game, earning a 6-5 shootout victory over the Buffalo Sabres after entering in relief on Dec. 9, 2024.
The move gives Utah another highly regarded young goaltender as the franchise continues building its roster following its relocation from Arizona.
