FORT McMURRAY — Two Fort McMurray men are facing drug and weapons charges after police seized nearly $100,000 worth of drugs and three firearms during an organized crime investigation.
Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams say officers searched two homes, a storage facility and three vehicles on June 11 with assistance from Wood Buffalo RCMP.
Police seized 915 grams of cocaine, 27 grams of methamphetamine, smaller quantities of other drugs and $4,165 in cash.
Three firearms and ammunition were also seized, including one prohibited firearm.
ALERT says the firearms will undergo forensic testing and ballistics analysis to determine whether they were used in other crimes.
“Community safety is paramount. ALERT and Wood Buffalo RCMP share a commitment to taking drugs and guns off the street and dismantling organized crime,” ALERT Staff Sgt. Mark Wait said.
Police say the investigation began several months earlier after officers received criminal intelligence about suspected drug trafficking activity involving the two men.
Matthew Berkshire, 34, of Fort McMurray, is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Berkshire was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court July 14.
Dylan Hurley, 36, is charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, possession of drugs, possession of proceeds of crime and multiple firearms offences.
Hurley is also charged with failing to comply with conditions of a release order.
He remains in custody and was expected to appear in court June 30.
ALERT is funded by the Alberta government and brings together specialized law enforcement resources from across the province to investigate serious and organized crime.
