FORT McMURRAY — Warmer temperatures and limited rainfall are increasing the wildfire danger in northern parts of the Fort McMurray Forest Area, although no active wildfires are currently burning in the region.
Alberta Wildfire says the danger is now rated high around Fort Fitzgerald and moderate in Fort Chipewyan, while remaining low in Fort McMurray.
Officials say drier forest conditions can allow wildfires to ignite more easily and spread quickly, and people spending time outdoors are being encouraged to use caution.
There have been 41 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area since the beginning of the year.
Alberta Wildfire says off-highway vehicles can ignite wildfires when grass, muskeg or other debris accumulates around hot components of the machines.
Riders are being advised to clean debris from their vehicles before heading out and to stop regularly while riding to check for material collecting around hot spots.
People travelling through muskeg or tall grass should stop and remove accumulated debris from their machines.
Riders are also encouraged to carry firefighting equipment, including a small shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher, and ensure mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.
Anyone who finds smouldering debris is advised to soak it with water, stir it and soak it again until it is fully extinguished.
Smoke or wildfires in forested areas can be reported by calling 310-FIRE.
