EDMONTON — Albertans curious about the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and data centres now have a single source for answers, with the provincial government launching a new website outlining how the facilities are approved, powered and regulated.
The new Alberta.ca portal explains how AI data centres are developed, the approvals required and the province’s strategy for attracting investment while protecting the reliability of the electricity grid. It also provides information for residents, municipalities and potential investors, along with details on environmental considerations, Indigenous consultation and regulatory oversight.
The website says Alberta is positioning itself as a North American leader in AI data centres by emphasizing abundant natural gas resources, competitive tax rates, a business-friendly regulatory environment and a relatively cool climate that can help reduce cooling costs.
Among the projects highlighted by the province’s broader strategy is Meta’s proposed more than $13-billion, one-gigawatt AI data centre in Sturgeon County, which would be powered by its own dedicated natural gas generating facility. Technologies New Energy is also developing a multi-phase $1.3-billion data centre district with projects planned in Olds, Bonnyville, Calgary and Edmonton. Existing commercial operators, including Equinix, Cologix and eStruxture, already operate enterprise data centres in the Calgary region.
The government says its “bring-your-own-power” policy requires large AI data centres to build or fund new electricity generation rather than relying solely on Alberta’s existing grid. It also says developers, rather than electricity consumers, will pay for any transmission upgrades needed to connect their facilities.
The website also outlines the province’s AI Data Centre Concierge Program, which serves as a single point of contact to help developers navigate regulatory approvals, grid connections and environmental requirements.
In addition, Alberta says qualifying projects valued at more than $250 million may be eligible for accelerated reviews under the Expedited 120-Day Approvals Act, aimed at reducing regulatory timelines for major capital investments.
The rapid expansion of AI data centres has also prompted questions from some communities about water use for cooling systems, electricity demand and the potential impact on long-term utility prices. The province says project approvals are tailored to each development and may require additional reviews depending on factors such as water requirements, power generation, environmental considerations and location
