FORT McMURRAY, — A Fort McMurray woman is facing impaired driving charges after RCMP say she was nearly twice the legal alcohol limit when her vehicle struck a deer and ended up in a ditch north of the city.
Wood Buffalo RCMP responded shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 1 after receiving multiple reports of a suspected impaired driver travelling north on Highway 63 toward Fort McMurray.
Police say the grey Chevrolet Equinox had entered the Wood Buffalo region from Lac La Biche County before striking a deer and leaving the roadway. The collision left the vehicle inoperable, but the driver was not injured.
Officers who arrived at the scene observed signs of alcohol impairment and arrested the driver. RCMP say breath samples later registered nearly twice the legal limit.
A 31-year-old Fort McMurray woman has been charged with impaired operation of a conveyance and operating a conveyance with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
She was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 9.
RCMP thanked members of the public who reported the driver’s behaviour and encouraged motorists to continue reporting dangerous or erratic driving when it is safe to do so.
The charges have not been proven in court.
