FORT McMURRAY — A 27-year-old Fort McMurray man is facing impaired driving and other charges after police say a motorcyclist fled an attempted traffic stop on Highway 63.
Wood Buffalo RCMP Municipal Traffic Services were patrolling southbound Highway 63 at Thickwood Boulevard at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 8 when officers spotted a Kawasaki motorcycle weaving through traffic at a high rate of speed.
Police activated their emergency equipment and attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the driver allegedly failed to stop and sped away.
RCMP did not pursue the motorcycle due to concerns for public safety.
Minutes later, officers continuing to patrol Highway 63 spotted the same motorcycle stopped at a red light at Morrison Street.
Police initiated another traffic stop and arrested the driver without incident.
RCMP say officers observed signs of alcohol impairment and made a demand of the driver.
The man has been charged with flight from police, dangerous operation, impaired operation and operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration exceeding 80 milligrams.
His name has not been released because an Information has not yet been sworn.
The accused was released from custody on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 16.
RCMP are asking people who witness dangerous driving to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP when it is safe to do so at 780-788-4040 or 310-RCMP. Anyone who witnesses or suspects an impaired driver is asked to call 911.
