FORT McMURRAY — More than 1,000 people turned out for a community aviation event at the Fort McMurray International Airport over the weekend, helping raise $2,250 for the local Royal Canadian Air Cadet squadron.
The free event, presented by the Fort McMurray Airport Authority and Alberta Air Tours, brought more than 30 pilots and aircraft from across Alberta to the former YMM North Terminal.
Visitors were able to get a close look at the aircraft, meet pilots and learn about aviation careers and local tourism.
“The welcome we received in Fort McMurray was incredible,” said Dina Jammaz, president of Alberta Air Tours.
“Our pilots loved sharing their passion for aviation with the community, and seeing families connect with the aircraft and the people behind them made this a really special stop.”
A barbecue by donation raised $2,250 for the 868 YMM Rotary Northstar Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, with burgers donated by Earls Kitchen + Bar.
Jo Day, chair of the squadron’s sponsoring committee, said the money will help support opportunities for local cadets.
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support we received from the community,” Day said.
“Thank you to everyone who stopped by the barbecue, made a donation and took the time to learn more about our organization.”
The event also included aviation and tourism booths, children’s activities, music, door prizes and food vendors.
Fort McMurray Airport Authority president and CEO Denean Robinson said the event accomplished what organizers had hoped for by bringing residents and the aviation community together.
“There was great energy as families explored the aircraft, met pilots and learned more about aviation,” Robinson said.
“Bringing our community together and raising funds for the 868 YMM Rotary Northstar RCACS made the day even more meaningful.”
The Fort McMurray International Airport is operated by the not-for-profit Fort McMurray Airport Authority.
