FORT McMURRAY — A Fort McMurray man is facing more than $3,400 in fines and 16 demerit points after RCMP say he drove a vehicle along a walking path to avoid construction traffic on Highway 63.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say the Municipal Traffic Section began investigating Aug. 12 after becoming aware of a video circulating on social media.
Police say the video showed a vehicle travelling along a walking path beside Highway 63 to bypass traffic congestion caused by construction.
Investigators identified the driver as a 30-year-old Fort McMurray man.
RCMP issued several provincial violation notices under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act for careless driving, stunt driving, distracted driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian.
The driver was also issued a violation notice under a Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo bylaw for operating a motor vehicle on or across a sidewalk.
Police say the violations carry a combined $3,404 in fines and 16 demerit points.
The driver can pay the fines or appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Nov. 13.
Wood Buffalo RCMP are asking people to report dangerous or erratic driving when it is safe to do so.
