FORT McMURRAY — A 21-year-old Fort McMurray man is facing four charges after a motorcycle was allegedly driven at more than 200 km/h and fled from police on two occasions.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say members of the Crime Reduction Unit first observed a black BMW motorcycle travelling at high speed in a 60 km/h zone in Thickwood on Aug. 25.
Police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled. Officers did not pursue because of concerns for public safety.
The following day, CRU officers spotted what police describe as the same motorcycle and driver heading north on Highway 63 from downtown Fort McMurray at more than 200 km/h.
RCMP say the driver again fled when officers attempted a traffic stop. Police did not initiate a pursuit.
Investigators identified an address associated with the motorcycle and attended shortly afterward.
The motorcycle and driver were found at the address, where the suspect was arrested without incident. Police seized the motorcycle.
Edwin Parathundathil Biju has been charged with two counts of dangerous operation and two counts of flight from a peace officer.
He was held for a judicial interim release hearing and has since been released from custody.
Parathundathil Biju is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Sept. 16.
“Dangerous driving, including excessive speed, places all road users at significant risk,” said Cpl. Craig Beson of the Crime Reduction Unit. “We remain committed to enforcing and upholding the law to promote public safety and to protect our community.”
