FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is moving to eliminate landfill disposal fees for residential garbage, although existing charges will remain in effect until council amends the municipality’s Fees, Rates and Charges Bylaw.
Council passed a motion at its Aug. 25 meeting directing administration to prepare the required amendment for consideration at an upcoming meeting.
If approved, residents will be able to dispose of up to 500 kilograms of household waste per day, per licence plate, without charge.
The change would cover items currently subject to disposal fees, along with materials collected through the annual big bin event, heavy item pickup and household hazardous waste programs.
The municipality says eliminating the fees is intended to encourage proper waste disposal, discourage illegal dumping, reduce litter cleanup costs and keep neighbourhoods cleaner.
Council also directed administration to propose amendments to the Community Standards Bylaw increasing penalties for littering.
The motion authorizes the mayor to ask the Alberta government to improve cleanup and maintenance along provincial highways leading into and through the region.
For now, the $15 disposal fee and all other applicable charges remain in place.
Residential waste weighing more than 200 kilograms continues to be charged at a rate of $105 per tonne.
Commercial disposal fees will remain in effect and are not included in the proposed changes.
