FORT MCMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has launched a new four-year plan aimed at helping older adults remain active, independent and connected in the region.
The 2026-30 Wood Buffalo Age-Friendly Work Plan was unveiled Friday at the Golden Years Society, with seniors, Elders, community partners and members of council attending.
The plan outlines goals, proposed actions and community partners for priorities identified around aging in Wood Buffalo.
“The launch of the Wood Buffalo Age-Friendly Work Plan marks an important milestone in our collective commitment to ensuring older adults can age with dignity, independence, and connection,” said Patricia Scantlebury-MacInnis, chair of the Advisory Committee on Aging.
“This plan reflects the priorities of our community and provides a clear path to continued action and progress.”
The strategy is organized around eight areas identified by the World Health Organization as affecting quality of life as people age.
They include communication and information, community support and health services, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation and housing.
The municipality says addressing those areas is intended to make services and community infrastructure more accessible and inclusive for older adults and people with different needs and abilities.
Wood Buffalo was officially recognized as an age-friendly community in 2024 by the World Health Organization and the federal and provincial governments.
Scantlebury-MacInnis said the Advisory Committee on Aging will continue working with municipal administration, council and community partners to make Wood Buffalo more inclusive for people as they age.
The municipality says improvements designed around the needs of seniors and Elders can also make the region more accessible for residents of all ages.
