FORT MCMURRAY — Construction on the Fort McKay Access Road has been delayed until Sept. 21 to accommodate increased traffic expected during a major Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. shutdown.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the construction schedule was adjusted following consultation with CNRL, as the shutdown is expected to bring increased traffic and additional wide loads to the area.
Beginning Sept. 21, Wood Buffalo Paving will start milling and paving the section of the Fort McKay Access Road running from just north of the CNRL turnoff to the Fort McKay Bridge.
Work on the remaining section is expected to begin after the CNRL shutdown is complete, currently anticipated for Oct. 3.
That phase will begin at Highway 63 and progress north toward the CNRL turnoff.
Construction will continue until the project is finished or weather conditions prevent further work this season.
The municipality says any work that cannot be completed this year is expected to resume in the second quarter of 2027.
Drivers are being advised increased construction activity could cause traffic delays and affect travel times along the route.
