FORT MCMURRAY — Arts Council Wood Buffalo is seeking Indigenous artists from across Canada to lead workshops through its Suncor Indigenous Artist Program.
The program will run from fall 2026 through summer 2027 and is intended to celebrate Indigenous art, culture and creativity while giving community members opportunities for hands-on learning and cultural exchange.
Artists must identify as Indigenous, either status or non-status, and have experience in the medium they propose to teach.
Applicants must also be able to turn their art form into a structured workshop and provide samples or documentation of previous work.
Potential workshops can include beading, leather work, sewing and ribbon work, painting, drawing, carving, textile arts and traditional crafts.
Arts Council Wood Buffalo says artists are encouraged to propose a medium connected to their own practice and cultural background.
Selected artists will work with council staff to determine a workshop date between fall 2026 and summer 2027.
The council will cover approved materials and supplies, while teaching fees will be based on the scope and format of each workshop.
Proposals were due Sept. 18 and were required to include a description of the workshop, examples of the artist’s work, teaching or facilitation experience and an estimated materials budget.
Arts Council Wood Buffalo says artists will be selected based on the strength and clarity of their proposal, experience with the proposed medium and connection to the art form they intend to teach.
Successful applicants are expected to be notified by Oct. 2.
