FORT MCMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP are warning residents about scammers using spoofed telephone numbers to make calls appear as though they are coming from police.
RCMP say they received multiple complaints Oct. 22 involving callers claiming to represent a “Cyber Crime Unit,” the RCMP or similar organizations.
Police say the scammers are using technology to spoof telephone numbers, causing the calls to appear on a recipient’s phone as though they originated from Wood Buffalo RCMP.
Victims reported being told police were investigating a fraud involving them or that their personal information had been compromised.
The callers then attempted to obtain personal information and, in some cases, provided victims with an email address.
RCMP say similar fraudulent calls have targeted people in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Ontario.
Staff Sgt. Sabrina Clayton, acting operations support officer with Wood Buffalo RCMP, said scammers often attempt to create a sense of urgency.
“Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to pressure victims into sharing personal information or taking immediate action,” Clayton said.
“The RCMP reminds the public that police officers and government agencies will not demand sensitive personal information over the phone, nor will they threaten arrest or legal action if you do not comply immediately.”
Police are advising people who receive suspicious calls to hang up and contact the agency directly using a publicly listed telephone number to confirm the caller’s identity.
RCMP also recommend people avoid providing personal information such as their address, birthdate or banking details during unsolicited calls or messages.
Anyone being pressured to send money or provide information immediately should end the conversation, police said.
People unsure about a telephone call, email or message are encouraged to speak with someone they trust or independently contact the organization involved using verified contact information.
RCMP say suspicious activity should be reported even if no money was lost and no personal information was provided.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud should gather documents, receipts and copies of related emails or text messages, contact any financial institution involved and report the incident to police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
Wood Buffalo RCMP continue to investigate the reports.
