FORT MCMURRAY — More than 570 homes across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo received FireSmart assessments this year, with more than $240,000 in rebates distributed to homeowners who completed recommended wildfire-resistant upgrades.
The municipality says all available funding for the 2026 FireSmart Home Rebate Program was used.
Residents who completed a FireSmart home assessment were eligible to apply for rebates after carrying out recommended work intended to reduce wildfire risk around their properties.
The assessments also provided homeowners with advice on measures they could take to make their homes more resistant to wildfire.
Demand for both the assessment and rebate programs was high enough to create scheduling delays during the season.
The municipality says the FireSmart team was unable to complete every requested home assessment before the program ended for the year.
Residents who were not able to receive an assessment can apply again when the programs return in spring 2027.
The rebate program is funded by the RMWB, with additional support from a $200,000 grant from Intact Insurance.
The program is available to homeowners in communities across the municipality.
