FORT MCMURRAY — The RMWB is encouraging residents and organizations to prepare for winter emergencies with a photo contest offering a winter emergency car kit as a prize.
The municipality says winter conditions can change quickly, bringing snow, ice, extreme cold, poor visibility and possible power outages.
Residents are being asked to take a photo showing how they prepare for winter emergencies, including a stocked home emergency kit, vehicle emergency kit or a family or workplace emergency plan.
Entries must include the participant’s name or business name and contact information.
The contest is open to individuals and organizations until Nov. 30, with a winter emergency car kit valued at $159 as the prize.
The RMWB says vehicle preparation should include winter tires and an emergency kit with items such as blankets, a flashlight, first aid supplies, food, water, booster cables and a phone charger or power bank.
Drivers are also encouraged to keep their fuel tanks topped up, check road conditions before travelling and avoid unnecessary travel during poor weather.
For households, the municipality recommends keeping at least 72 hours of drinking water and non-perishable food, along with medications, warm clothing, flashlights, batteries, hygiene supplies, important documents and supplies for pets.
Emergency kits should be kept somewhere accessible and household members should know where to find them.
Contest rules and emergency preparedness information are available at rmwb.ca/EmergencyPreparedness.
