EDMONTON — A 17-year-old Alberta youth has been arrested following an RCMP investigation into online correspondence with individuals affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS.
The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region announced Tuesday the youth was arrested Oct. 26 following an investigation by its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET).
Police say the investigation began in February 2026 after concerns arose over online correspondence between an internet user and individuals affiliated with ISIS.
The RCMP have initiated proceedings against the teenager through a terrorism peace bond under Section 810.011 of the Criminal Code, known as the fear of terrorism offence provision.
A terrorism peace bond is a preventive legal measure allowing authorities to seek court-imposed conditions when there are reasonable grounds to fear an individual may commit a terrorism-related offence. The proceedings do not constitute a criminal conviction.
The youth was released with conditions and was scheduled to appear in Fort McMurray Provincial Court on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The teenager cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police have not disclosed where in Alberta the youth resides or provided additional details about the nature of the online correspondence.
“As the criminal investigation is ongoing and before the courts, the RCMP will not be making any further comments at this time,” the federal policing division said in its release.
The RCMP are encouraging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity that could pose a threat to national security.
