The Fort McMurray Public School Division is partnering with five local elders to launch an Elders Council who will advise the School Division on Indigenous matters.
Promising to commit to do better on Truth and Reconciliation, championing Indigenous Education and follow up with action, the FMPSD has paired up with Elders from Mikisew Cree First Nation, Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Fort McMurray #468 First Nation, and Métis Local 1935.
“FMPSD believes that an elders’ voice and wisdom is crucial in many decision-making matters,” said Julia McDougall, Indigenous Student Services Cultural Teacher at FMPSD.
“They will help oversee our planning for the coming year and advise us on Indigenous matters. I am looking forward to working with the Elders. With their help, staff and students will gain so much knowledge and work towards reconciliation.”
Annalee Nutter, Associate Superintendent at FMPSD, says plans for the Elder Council have been in the works for awhile now.
“This group was a year in the making. COVID slowed down our plans. But, we were determined to get this going. Thanks to our Elders, and Julia, this has been an amazing experience. We are eager to learn from their wisdom, and insights, and share it with schools.”
