Suncor Energy Inc. in Fort McMurray is set to receive $3 million from the Government of Canada to advance emerging clean technologies to grow the economy.
The Honorable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Natural Resources Canada, made the announcement on Monday to invest a combined $7.5 million in four organizations in Alberta through the Clean Growth Program.
Cenovus Energy Inc. in Calgary will receive $2 million, MEG Energy Corp. in Christina Lake $1.5 million, and Seal Well Inc. in Calgary will receive $1.05 million.
Suncor confirmed that the investment will go towards supporting the Permanent Aquatic Storage Structure (PASS) technology.
They stated on social media that it was designed to improve tailings treatment and accelerate the reclamation of Suncor mine sites.
According to Suncor, they’ve constructed a demonstration pit lake, called Lake Miwasin, that contains PASS treated fluid tailings.
Chief Sustainability Officer and General Counsel, Arlene Strom, said in a press release “Suncor developed the Permanent Aquatic Storage Structure to increase our ability to reclaim tailings ponds. Collaboration continues to be important with this technology, and this support from NRCan helps to drive better environmental outcomes.”
