Wood Buffalo RCMP is offering some winter safety tips during this extended cold snap.
Staff Sergeant Sabrina Clayton says it’s important to make sure that emergency kit is ready to go in your vehicle if you’re hitting the road.
“In today’s current climate, tow trucks can take a significant amount of time to respond if there’s a number of vehicles broken down on the roads,” S/sgt. Clayton said. “You should be prepared to sit in your vehicle for some time before some help can arrive.”
She adds if it is an emergency, you can always call 9-1-1, but it’s important to do what you can ahead of time in case of a roadside emergency. A good roadside emergency kit includes a blanket, some non-perishable food like granola bars, and a candle with matches.
Staff Sergeant Clayton says those people spending any amount of time outdoors should be prepared.
“We’re looking at windchill factors of around -45, so skin can freeze very quickly,” S/sgt. Clayton said. “People can succumb to hypothermia in a very short amount of time, so obviously in our environment here, we always recommend dress appropriately for the weather.”
The entire province of Alberta was under an extreme cold warning Thursday. It is expected to continue on Friday.
