Fire Smart projects for this winter will be starting up as early as this week.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is warning residents they may see smoke in the region as the work commences.
Fire Smart is a part of the Municipality’s work to enhance the region’s resilience to wildfires through winter vegetation management. The work will take place at locations in Fort Chipewyan, Anzac, Janvier, and Fort McMurray, as well as in selected sections of Thickwood and along Highway 63 near the municipal wastewater treatment plant.
Residents might encounter smoke as crews work to keep our region “fire smart”. The RMWB is asking everyone to adhere to posted road signs, maintain a safe distance from workers and equipment, and refrain from entering restricted areas.
Projects will include mechanical removal of vegetation, but work will also be conducted by crews on the ground with chainsaws and other tools. At times, smoke may be visible as burning will be used to remove debris. Every effort will be made to minimize smoke impacts on nearby properties.
The Municipality has created a FireSmart Projects webpage for project-specific information.
