UPDATE: Wildfire outside of Fort McMurray growing rapidly

UPDATED – Friday, May 10 at 5:30 PM

A wildfire that sparked Thursday west-southwest of Fort McMurray is now considered out of control. 

The fire, near the Grand Rapids Wildland, is about 25 kilometres from the south end of Fort McMurray. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.

The Alberta Wildfire online map is indicating the fire has grown to 200 hectares in size as of Friday evening.

Crews, tankers, and helicopters are working on this fire by building a fire guard. At this time, no communities are being impacted. 

There are five other wildfires burning in the Fort McMurray Forest Area. Two are being held, and three others are considered under control. 

The wildfire risk in the Forest Area is considered extreme.
