Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions about the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Mayoral Candidate, Zulkifl Mujahid. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: Why are you running/what is your motivation?
I have been actively involved in politics for many years and come from a family with a long history of public service, leadership and community commitment are in my blood. I successfully ran for MLA in the provincial election, where I stood firmly for accountability and transparency, even when it came at a personal cost. I refused to turn a blind eye to issues that were not in the taxpayers’ best interests. In addition to my political experience, I have also served on multiple boards, gaining valuable insight into governance, fiscal responsibility, and community engagement.
Harvard: What qualifications make you suited for office?
I am seeking this role because I believe it’s time to stop unnecessary spending and refocus our priorities on the people of the RMWB. Our oilsands are generating significant revenue, yet our municipality is not flourishing as it should be. I want to reignite the sense of pride, excitement, and prosperity that once defined our community. By engaging taxpayers and encouraging investment in our region, we can rebuild confidence, strengthen our economy, and ensure that the RMWB’s success benefits everyone who calls it home.
Harvard: What three issues will you bring before council that are of key interest to you?
Establishing clear boundaries and maintaining them consistently is key to effective leadership. Open communication, mutual respect, and fairness are values I hold strongly. Respect must be given to be earned, and as mayor, I will ensure that all councillors have an equal voice and are treated with fairness. There will be no favoritism, only collaboration and professionalism in pursuit of what’s best for our residents.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Municipal Government Act?
By the end of my term, I want our council to be remembered for working together to restore the RMWB to the vibrant, flourishing community it deserves to be. I aim to strengthen our local economy by prioritizing local contractors, supporting small businesses, and creating incentives for both residents and newcomers to invest and start new enterprises. Transparency will be at the heart of every major decision, ensuring taxpayers have a real voice in how their money is spent. Additionally, improving our infrastructure, especially our roads, will be a top priority year-round. Most importantly, I am committed to ending backroom deals and unnecessary spending. Every contract will be transparent, fair, and awarded locally to keep opportunities within our community.
