FORT CHIPEWYAN — The boil water advisory for Fort Chipewyan has been lifted after Alberta Health Services confirmed the community’s tap water is once again safe to drink.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the water meets Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines following several days of testing at the local treatment plant. Residents are advised to run their taps for five to ten minutes and flush appliances with waterline connections, including refrigerators and ice dispensers.
While the boil water order has ended, a water conservation advisory remains in effect as reservoirs are being refilled. The municipality is asking residents to limit water use to essential needs only, take short showers, run only full loads of laundry and dishes, and avoid filling large containers or bathtubs.
Officials say bottled water pickup has ended now that treated water is safe to use. Enhanced testing and monitoring will continue to ensure water quality standards are maintained.
Both the boil water and conservation advisories were issued on Oct. 30 after low water levels and high winds on Lake Athabasca stirred up sediments that affected the community’s treatment process.
