FORT MCMURRAY — Nominations are now open for the 2026 Indigenous Sports Gallery, which aims to recognize local First Nation and Métis athletes, community builders and cultural leaders across the Wood Buffalo region.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says nominations will be accepted from April 7 to May 4, with selected individuals to be honoured at an induction ceremony before the gallery travels to communities for public display.
The initiative is intended to celebrate the achievements of Indigenous athletes and inspire youth by highlighting contributions to sport and community well-being.
The Indigenous Sports Gallery builds on a legacy first established during the 2023 Arctic Winter Games, aligning with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 87, which promotes Indigenous participation in sport. The municipality continued the program in 2024 and plans to host a new exhibition this summer.
Nominations are open in three categories, including youth athletes aged eight to 18, community builders who support sport and well-being, and local legends who have made lasting contributions to sport and community development.
Eligible nominees must be members of a local First Nation or Métis community and have lived within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo for at least 12 consecutive months.
Municipal officials say nominees will be selected by a group of local community members, with the gallery expected to travel throughout the region following the ceremony.
More information and nomination forms are available through the municipality’s website.
