FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP say a 24-year-old man is facing charges after being stopped for excessive speeding on a snow- and ice-covered road earlier this month.
Police say officers with municipal traffic services observed a blue Hyundai Veloster travelling eastbound on Thickwood Boulevard around 1:45 a.m. on April 5 at a high rate of speed. Radar recorded the vehicle at 139 kilometres per hour in a posted 60 km/h zone.
Mounties conducted a traffic stop and issued several provincial violation notices, along with a summons for the driver to appear in court.
The accused is charged under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act with exceeding the speed limit and careless driving, and is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on June 26.
Police say exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h results in a mandatory court appearance and can lead to significant fines, while a careless driving conviction carries a fine of $852.
RCMP say penalties for speeding increase with the severity of the offence, with demerits and fines rising as speeds exceed posted limits. Fines can also be doubled in areas where workers or emergency responders are present.
Officers are reminding drivers to slow down and adjust to road and weather conditions, noting excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases the likelihood and severity of collisions.
