FORT McMURRAY — Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers conducted 23 impaired driving investigations in March, with several drivers facing suspensions and criminal charges.
Police say the investigations were initiated through proactive traffic enforcement, check stops and reports from the public.
As a result, 14 drivers were issued immediate roadside sanctions under Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act, while four received three-day suspensions and two were handed 24-hour suspensions. Three drivers are facing impaired driving charges under the Criminal Code.
An immediate roadside sanction includes a minimum $1,000 fine, a victim surcharge, a 90-day licence suspension and a 30-day vehicle seizure, with penalties increasing for repeat offences.
Mounties say impaired driving is not limited to alcohol and can include cannabis or prescription drugs.
Police are reminding drivers to plan ahead if consuming alcohol or other substances, including arranging a designated driver or alternative transportation.
RCMP are also urging the public to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
