FORT MCMURRAY — Royal Canadian Mounted Police say they are investigating after a dog was seen being pushed from a pickup truck onto a frozen surface in a widely shared video.
The dog is now safe and in the care of the Fort McMurray SPCA.
The organization says the dog, named Frankie, has been assessed by its medical team and appears to be in good physical health.
Staff say the animal is frightened and withdrawn, and believe redness in her eyes is likely related to stress. She will continue to be monitored, with a veterinarian to be consulted if needed.
Frankie is being kept out of public kennels to allow time to decompress, with staff providing quiet walks and additional care.
The SPCA says it has received an outpouring of support from the community following the incident, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media.
The footage shows a white pickup truck driving onto an ice-covered area near Amoco Road and Willow Lake before a mixed-breed dog is forced out of the vehicle and left behind.
The organization says Frankie was fortunate to be rescued early and without serious physical injury, noting many animals in similar situations are not as lucky.
It is using the case to highlight the need for continued support of initiatives such as the Isabella Paws fund, which helps cover advanced medical care for abused, neglected and abandoned animals.
The SPCA is encouraging donations as it prepares for its 15th annual Animal Abuse Prevention Walk.
