EDMONTON — Alberta’s government has introduced legislation aimed at speeding up approvals for major energy and industrial projects, saying the move is needed to attract investment and remain competitive.
Bill 30, the Expedited 120-Day Approvals Act, would set a timeline requiring regulatory approvals for eligible projects to be completed within 120 days, if passed.
Officials say the proposed law is intended to reduce delays and improve coordination between government and regulatory bodies, while maintaining environmental protections.
The province says the measure is part of a broader effort to support growth in the energy, mining and industrial sectors, with a goal of increasing production and expanding access to global markets.
Under the proposal, projects would need to meet specific criteria to qualify for expedited review, including a minimum capital investment of $250 million and alignment with provincial priorities.
The legislation would also require proponents to demonstrate progress on environmental assessments and Indigenous consultation before being considered for accelerated timelines.
A new Project Coordination Review Team would be created to assess applications and make recommendations, with final approval for expedited status granted through an order in council.
The government says the changes are needed as competition for investment intensifies, noting billions of dollars in capital have shifted to other jurisdictions in recent years.
If approved, the legislation would apply to projects deemed strategically important to Alberta’s economy, with the province aiming to streamline development while continuing to meet regulatory and consultation requirements.
