FORT McMURRAY — A national fundraiser supporting families affected by workplace tragedies is set to return to Fort McMurray next month, bringing together workers, families and advocates focused on safety and prevention.
Steps for Life, a five-kilometre walk organized by Threads of Life, will take place May 2 at Birchwood Trails in Thickwood, with registration opening at 10 a.m. and opening remarks at 11 a.m. at the Doug Barnes Cabin.
The annual event raises funds for programs that support individuals and families coping with the impacts of workplace fatalities, life-altering injuries and occupational disease, while also promoting awareness about the importance of safer workplaces.
Threads of Life says it is currently supporting more than 4,000 individuals and family members across Canada who have been affected by workplace tragedies, offering peer support and resources aimed at helping people through recovery and healing.
In Fort McMurray, organizers say the walk is intended to foster a sense of community and shared purpose among those impacted, wh016ile encouraging conversations around prevention and workplace safety culture.
Local spokesperson Jeniffer Kotylak, whose sister was killed in a workplace incident, says the organization has played a key role in supporting her family and shaping her ongoing commitment to safety awareness.
She says her experience has strengthened her resolve to promote prevention and challenge the belief workplace incidents cannot happen to individuals or their families.
The event is open to the public and designed to be family-friendly, with participants encouraged to register online.
Organizers say funds raised through Steps for Life help sustain support programs and contribute to broader efforts aimed at reducing workplace injuries and fatalities across Canada.
