FORT McMURRAY — Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo council has approved a series of updates to its Rural Water and Sewer Servicing program aimed at improving clarity around costs, eligibility and timelines.
The program is designed to bring piped water and sewer services to southern rural communities, replacing trucked water delivery and septic hauling.
Among the changes, council has removed Draper from the program, citing challenging ground conditions and risks to infrastructure.
The municipality also clarified rules for vacant lots, allowing property owners to apply once development and building permits are approved and a foundation is in place.
A revised fee structure will now be based on services received rather than location, with costs set at $10,000 for either water or sewer, and $16,000 for both.
Council has also extended the appeal period to 30 days, giving residents more time to gather information and submit requests.
The program has been expanded to include subsidized connections for small businesses and institutions such as schools, childcare facilities and faith-based organizations.
Connection deadlines vary by community, with Janvier and Saprae Creek Estates set for June 30, 2026, and Anzac, Conklin and Gregoire Lake Estates set for Dec. 31, 2028.
Officials are encouraging eligible property owners to begin the application process, which is offered at no charge.
