FORT McMURRAY — A record-setting snow season in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is giving way to spring cleanup efforts, with officials reporting unprecedented volumes collected at local disposal sites.
The municipality says more than 757,000 cubic metres of snow was hauled this winter, with the Tower Road site alone recording about 530,000 cubic metres, surpassing last season’s total by a significant margin.
With the regular winter maintenance schedule now complete, crews are shifting focus to clearing catch basins and back alleys to manage the spring thaw and reduce flooding risks.
Municipal officials say work is also underway on seasonal priorities, including pothole repairs and preparations for street sweeping.
Pothole repair crews are already active across municipal roads and properties, with residents encouraged to report issues through the Pulse system.
Street sweeping is expected to begin on priority routes as weather conditions allow, with residential and rural areas to follow.
The Tower Road snow disposal site remains open, with closure details to be shared with permit holders at a later date.
The municipality is also preparing to update its Urban Ice and Snow Control Policy, which is set to expire in October, with public engagement opportunities expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
