FORT McMURRAY — A community gathering is planned in Fort McMurray next month to mark the 10th anniversary of the Horse River wildfire.
The event will take place May 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Doug Barnes Cabin in the Thickwood neighbourhood, offering residents a space to reflect, connect and commemorate the 2016 disaster.
Mayor Sandy Bowman said the anniversary is both a difficult and meaningful milestone for the region.
“Ten years later, we still carry the memories of those days, but we also carry the spirit, strength and togetherness that got us through them,” Bowman said. “This gathering is an opportunity to pause, remember and look ahead with optimism.”
Organizers say the event will include free activities focused on reflection, community connection and well-being. Programming will include opportunities to learn about traditional medicines, share stories and take part in family-friendly activities.
Wellness supports will also be offered, including yoga, meditation and guided hikes along the Birchwood Trails.
Additional anniversary events are planned throughout May in surrounding communities, including Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Saprae Creek Estates, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan.
Officials say the anniversary comes as the region continues to recover and grow in the years since the wildfire, which forced the evacuation of more than 80,000 residents and destroyed thousands of homes.
A 2025 municipal census showed population growth for the first time in a decade, while officials point to ongoing investment, updated planning frameworks and expanded wildfire mitigation efforts as signs of continued progress.
The municipality says initiatives such as FireSmart vegetation management and updated emergency planning have been strengthened since 2016 to reduce future wildfire risk and improve community preparedness.
