EDMONTON — Nominations are now open for the 2026 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards, recognizing individuals who make significant contributions to communities across the province.
The Alberta government says the annual program highlights volunteers whose time, energy and commitment help strengthen communities and improve quality of life.
“Volunteers are the foundation of strong and connected communities in Alberta,” Arts, Culture and Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir said in a statement. “The Stars of Alberta Volunteer Awards are an opportunity to recognize these everyday heroes who make our province a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
The nomination period opened April 20 during National Volunteer Week and will run until June 30, giving Albertans an opportunity to put forward individuals who have made a difference in their communities.
Awards are presented in several categories, including youth, adult and senior, with two recipients selected in each age group. A separate Breaking Barriers category recognizes volunteers working to promote inclusion, including efforts to fight racism, support LGBTQ communities and challenge gender discrimination.
Gemma Dunn, executive director of the Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations, said volunteer recognition programs play an important role in highlighting community impact.
“National Volunteer Week is a celebration of the people who bring life to our communities,” Dunn said. “Programs like Stars of Alberta are important ways to recognize, support and empower those who give their time to make our communities stronger and more connected.”
Officials say volunteers play a critical role in Alberta’s non-profit sector, supporting more than 28,000 organizations across the province.
In 2023, Albertans contributed more than 145 million volunteer hours, representing an estimated economic value of nearly $4 billion.
The province says the awards are part of broader efforts to recognize volunteer contributions year-round, including through the Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program.
Albertans can submit nominations online for individuals they believe have made a meaningful impact in their communities.
