FORT McMURRAY — Four residents have been recognized for their contributions to the community at the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s annual Excellence Awards.
Awards for Citizen of the Year, Everyday Hero, Indigenous Advocate and Youth were presented during a ceremony held April 23.
Michael Jesso was named Citizen of the Year for more than three decades of volunteerism, advocacy and leadership in the region. His work includes organizing community events and fundraisers supporting vulnerable populations, as well as promoting inclusion and local history.
The Everyday Hero award was presented to Sandy MacDonald, alongside his canine companion Sam Langford, for their community outreach and fundraising efforts. Through initiatives such as Cause 4 Paws, MacDonald has helped raise more than $200,000 for the Fort McMurray SPCA and provided hands-on support to residents across the region.
Elder Alice Martin received the Indigenous Advocate award in recognition of her longstanding leadership in advancing Indigenous rights, culture and reconciliation. Her contributions include work with advisory groups and initiatives focused on healing and community understanding.
The Youth award went to Nirva Mehta for leadership and advocacy work supporting young people, including involvement with the Mayor’s Advisory Council on Youth and broader national initiatives.
Municipal officials say the awards highlight individuals whose efforts help strengthen connections and foster a sense of belonging across the Wood Buffalo region.
