FORT McMURRAY — Anzac will be in the spotlight during upcoming council discussions, as Ward 4 Coun. Kyle Vandecasteyen brings forward a series of motions focused on rural priorities.
The notices of motion were introduced at the April 28 Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo council meeting and are set to be debated at a special council meeting scheduled for May 19 in Anzac.
One proposal calls for administration to explore the feasibility of developing a dirt bike track in Anzac, including considerations around location, safety standards, environmental impacts and potential costs. The motion points to strong local interest in outdoor and motorized recreation and the benefits of purpose-built facilities.
Another motion targets Gregoire Lake Estates, where Vandecasteyen is seeking the development of a shared outdoor community gathering space. The proposal highlights the absence of a designated public area and suggests modest amenities such as picnic tables and fire pits could support community connections.
A third notice of motion focuses on emergency services, directing administration to consider the design and construction of helipads in rural communities as part of the 2027 budget. The proposal notes Transport Canada-compliant helipads could improve response times and support air ambulance operations.
The final motion calls for the creation of a rural snow and ice control policy. While urban areas have established service standards, the proposal says rural communities lack a clear framework outlining service levels and expectations.
Each motion directs administration to report back to council with findings and recommendations by October.
Council is expected to consider the proposals at the May 19 meeting in Anzac.
