FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo will hold a special council meeting in Anzac later this month as the community marks the 10-year anniversary of the Horse River wildfire.
The municipality says the meeting will take place May 19 at the Anzac Recreation Centre beginning at 5 p.m.
Municipal officials say most agenda items are expected to focus specifically on issues affecting the Anzac area.
Residents will be able to attend the meeting in person, while a recording will also be posted to the municipality’s YouTube channel following the session.
The municipality says the meeting forms part of council’s ongoing commitment to periodically hold meetings in rural communities under council procedure rules.
Earlier in the day, residents from across the region are being invited to attend a free wildfire anniversary event at Camp Yogi from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The municipality says the event will focus on reflection, wellness and community connection as residents remember the 2016 wildfire, which forced the evacuation of nearly 90,000 people from Fort McMurray and surrounding communities.
Activities planned for the event include yoga, meditation, gentle movement sessions, flowerpot painting and opportunities for residents to share personal stories and reflections.
Free seedlings will also be distributed to attendees.
Residents will also be able to meet with members of council, municipal administration and representatives from organizations including the Multicultural Association of Wood Buffalo, Alberta Forestry and the Canadian Red Cross.
Light refreshments and snacks will be available during the event.
The municipality says more information about wildfire anniversary programming is available online through the RMWB website.
