GIBBONS, Alta. — Next time you’re driving to or from Edmonton, you may want to take a detour through Gibbons. A Gibbons resident recently won $2 million on a Scratch & Win lottery ticket purchased at the town’s local pharmacy.
Sandra Trenerry said she bought the winning $20 VAULT Scratch & Win ticket at Gibbons Remedy’s RX Pharmacy before returning the next day to scan it again because she could hardly believe what she was seeing.
“I went back to my pharmacist and I said, ‘Check these with me because I’m not sure if I’m seeing this right!’” Trenerry said in a statement released by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.
“She checked it and said, ‘Sandy… oh my, God!’”
Trenerry said she also shared the news with her fiancé, although the timing may not have been ideal.
“He just about hit the ditch!” she joked. “He was so surprised!”
The Alberta woman said the unexpected windfall is already accelerating some long-discussed life plans, including retirement.
“I said I was going to retire next year but now I might do it sooner!” she said.
Trenerry said she and her fiancé have also been engaged for eight years after COVID-19 disrupted earlier wedding plans.
“We may elope now!” she said.
The new millionaire added she also hopes to buy a new vehicle and share some of the winnings with her grandchildren.
“I’m just so surprised!” Trenerry said. “I can’t believe it!”
The winning ticket was purchased at Gibbons Remedy’s RX Pharmacy located along 50 Avenue in Gibbons, northeast of Edmonton.
According to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, six $2-million top prizes still remain available in the $20 VAULT Scratch & Win game, along with several additional prizes ranging from $1,000 to $500,000.
