FORT McMURRAY — Homeowners across the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo could qualify for thousands of dollars in rebates for wildfire-resistant home upgrades through the municipality’s FireSmart Home Rebate Program.
Municipal officials say the program is intended to help residents reduce wildfire risks around homes and properties by supporting upgrades using more fire-resistant materials.
Funding for the rebate program comes from the municipality along with an additional $200,000 grant from Intact Insurance.
The program is available to homeowners in communities across the region.
To qualify, homeowners must first complete a free FireSmart Home Assessment before beginning any work. Municipal FireSmart teams will then provide recommendations and information about eligible rebates.
Rebates are being offered on a first-come, first-served basis after FireSmart officials confirm completed upgrades.
Eligible projects include roof replacements and roof upgrades worth up to $2,000, deck upgrades worth up to $1,000, window replacements worth up to $1,000, and fence or gate upgrades worth up to $1,000.
Homeowners replacing siding with more fire-resistant materials may qualify for rebates worth up to $4,000.
New home construction projects may also qualify for siding or decking upgrade rebates.
The municipality says rebates are limited to one per homeowner and one per address until available funding is exhausted.
Officials say more than 400 FireSmart Home Assessments were completed across the region last year.
Residents completing a FireSmart Home Assessment in 2026 will also be entered into a draw for one of three chainsaw prize packages.
The municipality says the assessments are designed to help homeowners better understand how wildfire risks can be reduced around residential properties.
