DETROIT — More than 106,000 Canadian Jeep owners are being urged to park their vehicles outside and away from homes, garages and other vehicles as Stellantis recalls more than 1.3 million SUVs and trucks worldwide over a potential fire risk.
The automaker announced Tuesday it is recalling 2021 through 2025 model-year Jeep Wranglers and Jeep Gladiators after identifying a defect involving wiring connected to the electric hydraulic power steering pump.
Stellantis said a loose electrical connection can overheat and melt, potentially igniting nearby combustible materials and causing a vehicle fire.
The recall affects about 106,000 vehicles in Canada, nearly 1.08 million in the United States, 23,000 in Mexico and roughly 125,000 in other markets worldwide.
The company said the issue can occur even when a vehicle is parked and the ignition is turned off, prompting the unusual recommendation for owners to park outdoors until repairs can be completed.
Stellantis said it is aware of at least 72 fires that may be linked to the defect, along with one reported injury. No fatalities or crashes related to the issue have been reported.
The recall covers Jeep’s popular Wrangler SUV and Gladiator pickup truck, both of which are widely used for off-road recreation and daily driving across North America.
According to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, regulators opened an investigation into the issue in September 2024 after reports of fires involving certain Wrangler and Gladiator models.
Stellantis said it spent more than a year investigating the problem through vehicle inspections, component analysis, CT scans, X-rays and other testing before determining the defect posed what it described as an unreasonable safety risk.
The company said dealers will inspect affected vehicles and, if necessary, repair or replace the wiring harness or electric hydraulic power steering pump.
Stellantis expects a remedy to be available no later than July and will notify owners when repairs can be scheduled.
