FORT McMURRAY — Organizers of the 2028 Alberta Summer Games are seeking community members to help lead planning efforts for the provincial sporting event, which is set to bring hundreds of athletes and visitors to the region.
Applications are now being accepted for positions on the Games’ board of directors, with a deadline of June 22.
The Alberta Summer Games will be held in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo from July 20 to 23, 2028.
The event, which has been a fixture of amateur sport in Alberta for more than 50 years, provides athletes aged 11 to 16 with an opportunity to compete at the provincial level in a variety of sports.
Organizers say competitions are expected to include events such as mountain biking, baseball, rugby, swimming and beach volleyball, among others.
Recruitment is underway for a range of board positions responsible for overseeing various aspects of the Games.
The chairperson will be selected first and is expected to attend the 2026 Alberta Summer Games in Strathcona County from July 16 to 19 as part of the planning process.
Additional positions include directors responsible for athletes village and food services, culture and ceremonies, facilities, media and communications, tourism and visitor experience, safety and security, information technology, sport operations, transportation and volunteer workforce management.
Organizers say serving on the board offers an opportunity to help shape the vision and delivery of one of Alberta’s largest amateur sporting events while showcasing the region to visitors from across the province.
Board members will work with community groups, government partners and sport organizations to help prepare for the Games and support youth sport development.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo says the event is expected to leave a lasting legacy through volunteer development, community engagement and increased exposure for the region.
The remaining board positions are expected to be filled by the end of August.
