FORT McMURRAY, Alta. — Local artists are being invited to submit completed works for possible purchase by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo as part of its annual public art acquisition program.
The municipality says it is seeking artwork that reflects the region’s history, culture, natural landscapes and lived experiences. Selected pieces will be added to the Municipal Public Art Collection and displayed at locations throughout the region.
Community Services has allocated $20,000 from the Municipal Public Art Reserve for the 2026 acquisition program.
Under the municipality’s public art policy, one per cent of annual capital construction project costs is directed to the reserve fund.
Artists must currently live in, or have lived in, the Wood Buffalo region for at least six months. Eligibility extends to residents of local First Nation and Métis communities.
The municipality is accepting submissions in a variety of visual art forms, including paintings, sculpture, pottery, Indigenous art, fibre arts, mixed media and other original works suitable for public display.
Artwork must be in good condition, meet safety requirements and ideally have been created within the past five years.
The selection process will include a digital review followed by an in-person inspection of shortlisted works.
Submissions will be accepted until July 30.
Artists can find eligibility requirements and application details through the municipality’s public art program.
