Wildfire danger rises across Fort McMurray Forest Area
FORT McMURRAY — Wildfire danger has reached very high levels in Fort Fitzgerald and remains high across the rest of the Fort McMurray Forest Area as warmer temperatures increase the risk of new fires.
Alberta Wildfire said Monday that wildfires can easily start and spread under current conditions and is urging residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire.
There is currently one active wildfire in the forest area. Wildfire MWF026 is classified as under control.
Since Jan. 1, crews have responded to 26 wildfires in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Officials are also encouraging residents to take a wildfire safety pledge aimed at reducing the number of human-caused fires. Participants who sign the pledge will be entered for a chance to win an educational helicopter flight.
The pledge asks residents to commit to using fire responsibly, fully extinguishing campfires, checking off-highway vehicles for debris, reporting smoke to 310-FIRE and promoting fire safety while enjoying Alberta’s forests.
Alberta Wildfire is also reminding off-highway vehicle users to regularly remove debris from hot spots on their machines, carry basic firefighting equipment and ensure mufflers and spark arrestors are functioning properly.
Residents are also being reminded never to leave campfires unattended and to fully extinguish fires by soaking, stirring and soaking again until coals are cool to the touch.
The Fort McMurray Forest Area includes a large portion of northeastern Alberta, including communities such as Fort McMurray and Fort Fitzgerald.
