Fort McMurray will be proudly represented next month as twelve local female athletes travel to Strathcona County to compete at the 2026 Alberta Summer Games as members of the Zone 7 U14 Girls Basketball Team.
What makes this team particularly special is that every athlete on the roster calls Fort McMurray home.
These young athletes have spent countless hours in gyms across our community developing their skills, building friendships, and earning the opportunity to compete on one of Alberta’s largest provincial sporting stages.
The Alberta Summer Games will take place July 16–19, bringing together the province’s top young athletes to compete, learn, and represent their regions with pride.
Beyond basketball, this journey represents something bigger.
Research consistently shows that girls are far more likely to leave organized sport during their teenage years. Programs, coaches, volunteers, families, and communities all play an important role in ensuring young women continue to have opportunities to grow through sport.
For these twelve athletes, the Alberta Summer Games represent confidence, leadership, teamwork, resilience, and memories that will last a lifetime.
As a community, we have an opportunity to rally behind them.
We invite Fort McMurray residents, businesses, friends, family members, and sports fans to follow along as these athletes prepare for competition and proudly represent our community on the provincial stage.
