Media Release of Chiefs representing First Nations in Treaties 6, 7 and 8 are calling for RCMP and auditor general investigations into Premier Danielle Smith
CALGARY — Chiefs representing First Nations in Treaties 6, 7 and 8 are calling for RCMP and auditor general investigations into Premier Danielle Smith and members of Alberta’s United Conservative government over allegations their actions may constitute treason under the Criminal Code.
The Assembly of Treaty Chiefs says it unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday seeking an investigation into whether the actions of Smith and UCP members amount to treason under Section 46 of the Criminal Code.
In a news release Wednesday, the assembly said it was seeking the investigation because of what it described as “the intentional violation of the Treaties,” the calling of a referendum despite “severe risks to Canada’s sovereignty and the Treaty Relationship,” and a failure to act on privacy rights violations affecting millions of people.
The chiefs also alleged the government has acted amid “significant risks of foreign interference and influence.”
The assembly said the North-West Mounted Police, now the RCMP, committed at the time of treaty-making to ensuring the safety of First Nations and their territories, while the Crown guaranteed peace and goodwill in exchange for sharing the land.
“United, the Chiefs of Treaty No. 6, Treaty No. 7 and Treaty No. 8 Territories now call for the fulfillment of this commitment in the form of a full investigation,” the release said.
