FORT McMURRAY — Property crime is down across Alberta, including in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, according to new statistics released by the RCMP.
Alberta RCMP says reported property offences have declined compared with the same period last year. The trend includes lower numbers of break and enters, vehicle thefts and thefts under $5,000.
Locally, Wood Buffalo RCMP reports an even steeper decline in several key categories.
Break and enters are down 40 per cent compared with the same period in 2025, while motor vehicle thefts have fallen 27 per cent. Thefts under $5,000 are down 18 per cent.
RCMP say year-over-year comparisons help police identify longer-term crime trends, direct enforcement efforts and work with communities to prevent future offences.
Police are encouraging residents to continue reporting suspicious activity and property crimes, saying public reporting helps investigators identify patterns and respond more effectively.
“Working together, residents, community partners, and law enforcement can reduce crime and enhance community safety,” Wood Buffalo RCMP said in a statement.
The detachment is also reminding residents to take simple steps to reduce opportunities for crime, including securing homes and vehicles, removing valuables from sight and promptly reporting suspicious activity.
Alberta RCMP says it plans to continue releasing monthly crime updates to keep residents informed about crime trends across the province.
