FORT McMURRAY — Three youths were injured after an all-terrain vehicle collided with a pole south of Fort McMurray over the weekend.
Wood Buffalo RCMP said officers were called shortly after 12:40 a.m. Sunday to assist Regional Emergency Services on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
Emergency crews had located an ATV that had struck a pole.
Police said three youths, ranging in age from 11 to 16, were riding the ATV at the time of the collision.
All three sustained injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to the Northern Lights Regional Health Centre. RCMP did not release details on the extent of the injuries.
Investigators said it does not appear any of the youths were wearing helmets. Police have not yet determined which of the occupants was operating the ATV when the collision occurred.
Alcohol may have been a factor, RCMP said.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
The collision prompted RCMP to remind off-highway vehicle users about the importance of wearing approved helmets and protective equipment, riding only in designated areas and never operating an ATV or other off-highway vehicle while impaired.
Under Alberta law, impaired driving provisions apply to off-highway vehicles, and riders found operating while impaired can face criminal charges.
