FORT McMURRAY — The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is encouraging residents to be good neighbours this summer by keeping properties tidy, driving safely and following local bylaws.
Aaron Anderson, manager of bylaw services, highlighted five areas where residents can help keep the community safe and welcoming during the busy summer months.
The municipality is reminding homeowners and businesses to maintain their properties by cutting grass and removing discarded items to help create clean, attractive neighbourhoods.
Pet owners are also being encouraged to keep dogs on a leash while in public, clean up after their animals and avoid leaving pets inside parked vehicles during hot weather. The municipality says owners should also ensure pets have access to plenty of water.
Officials are also reminding residents electric scooters and other miniature vehicles, including electric skateboards and pocket bikes, are prohibited on public roads, sidewalks, multi-use trails, parks and greenspaces throughout the municipality. They may only be operated on private property.
The municipality says enforcement is increasing and violations could result in fines or the impoundment of e-scooters.
Safe driving also remains a priority during the summer months. Anderson said speeding continues to be a common concern, with Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo peace officers working alongside Wood Buffalo RCMP to enforce speed limits.
Cyclists are also being reminded to keep bicycles in good working order and wear helmets while riding.
