FORT McMURRAY — More than 500 employees working across the Fort McMurray International Airport campus were recognized Thursday as the Fort McMurray Airport Authority marked Airport Workers Day with a community celebration.
The event brought together airport staff, business partners, elected officials and community leaders for a barbecue, equipment displays, door prizes and a proclamation declaring June 25 Airport Workers Day in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
Regional councillor Ty Brandt presented the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Sandy Bowman.
“Today is about celebrating the people who make our airport campus exceptional,” Fort McMurray Airport Authority president and CEO Denean Robinson said in a statement.
“Whether you’re welcoming passengers, maintaining critical infrastructure, supporting aircraft operations or working behind the scenes, every role contributes to the success of our airport and our region.”
The airport campus is home to more than 40 businesses employing over 500 people in roles ranging from customer service and maintenance to security screening, aircraft rescue and firefighting, and ground handling.
Airport Workers Day is a national initiative recognizing aviation professionals who help keep Canada’s airports operating safely and efficiently.
Lisa Sweet, chief executive officer of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Economic Development and Tourism, also addressed the gathering, highlighting aviation’s role in supporting tourism, attracting investment and strengthening the regional economy.
According to the airport authority, the Fort McMurray International Airport contributes more than $290 million annually to the local economy while serving as a transportation hub for residents, businesses, industry and visitors.
“Airports are powered by people,” Robinson said.
“Today was an opportunity to pause, celebrate and thank the incredible individuals who bring professionalism, dedication and pride to their work every day. We are grateful for everything they do for YMM and for our region.”
The airport authority also thanked local businesses, community organizations and airport partners that supported the event.
