FORT McMURRAY — A Fort McMurray man is facing multiple charges following a hit-and-run collision in Thickwood.
Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a 911 call at about 2:44 p.m. on July 24 after a blue Chevrolet Equinox allegedly sideswiped a GMC Terrain on Spruce Street and continued driving without stopping.
Police say the driver of the GMC was not physically injured.
RCMP located the suspect vehicle a short time later parked at a residence on Timberline Drive. Officers found the alleged driver inside the residence and reported observing signs of impairment.
Police say the man was arrested but allegedly resisted officers and repeatedly attempted to assault them. RCMP allege he later refused to provide breath samples as part of the investigation.
Robert McGill, 44, of Fort McMurray is charged with refusing to comply with a demand, impaired operation of a conveyance, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, assaulting a peace officer, failing to stop after an accident and mischief under $5,000.
McGill was held for a judicial interim release hearing before being released on conditions.
He is scheduled to appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on Aug. 19.
“This collision may have had minor consequences, but the next one might not,” said Insp. Troy Switzer, acting officer in charge of Wood Buffalo RCMP. “Impaired driving puts everyone on the road at risk.”
Switzer urged motorists to plan for a safe ride home before consuming alcohol or other impairing substances.
RCMP are asking anyone who witnesses or suspects an impaired driver to call 911.
